Background of the Maladvertisement Campaign

In July 2019, StormEye, in its routine scouting over online security landscape, spotted irregularities in multiple Facebook advertisements related to Mr. Alan Tam’s investment of Bitcoin. The series of advertisements triggered StormEye’s alert system which ran on the back of Facebook softened the advertisement policy related to cryptocurrency and blockchain and the speech made by Alan Tam on 30 Jun 2019 in Hong Kong. These advertisements were very similar to those previously banned Facebook advertisements on cryptocurrencies and Initial Coin Offering (ICO). The alert echoed with the news of numerous western celebrities’ Twitter accounts being hacked and that false news related to cryptocurrency were shared. StormEye proceeded with the investigation of these advertisements on Bitcoin investment.
